50 years of Pulsars
50 years of Pulsars
In 1967, Jocelyn Bell discovered something in the invisible radio sky that had never been seen before. Something which produced periodic flashes of radio waves. Initially dubbed Little Green Man 1 because it seemed it must be artificial, it was soon identified as the first example of a cosmic lighthouse – a pulsar – a spinning remnant of the explosion of a massive star. Professor Tim O’Brien will talk to Jodrell Bank astronomers Professor Ben Stappers and Dr Sally Cooper about 50 years of pulsars and how these amazing objects help us understand the Universe.
