Alice Eldridge, ‘Learning to Listen to Biodiversity’ // Audible Silence Series
This talk introduces the emerging scientific field of Ecoacoustics, which investigates the ecological role of sound. Alice will share results from recent research carried out in UK woodlands and Ecuadorian rainforests, which demonstrate how listening with machines is set to revolutionise global conservation efforts by providing a new way to monitor biodiversity.
After her talk Alice will then give a new live performance ‘In Katak’, celebrating the music of a Balinese nocturnal frog chorus, performed here on cello and laptop. Dr Alice Eldridge is a transdisciplinary researcher, musician and lecturer at the University of Sussex. Her work bridges sound, technology and ecology in scientific and creative domains and includes ecosystemic approaches to music-making and computational, acoustic methods for conservation.
