22-25 July 2021 Jodrell Bank Observatory

Hands-on Family Activities

Would you like to travel to space with us? Meet our astronaut at the pagoda for an early morning space journey. We will be setting off in our own Jodrell Bank rocket and travel through our Solar System and out into the vastness of space to finally land on an alien planet! What might this foreign planet be like? Is there alien life out there? Join us for this explorer walk investigating “alien” flora and fauna in the arboretum.

Any budding space traveller needs a rocket to escape earth’s gravity. In our morning drop-in activity session we will design and build our own space rockets powered by clean renewable energy from a source we can find all around us: air! We will also look at other ways to investigate the enormous power hidden in the wind and how we can harness it: have a go at constructing a wind turbine from old egg cartons and other recycled materials!

The afternoon will be buzzing with activity too: give our friends the bees a helping hand by creating a Bee & Bee – a home for a bee to nest in. You can take your bee & bee home with you to put it up in your own garden. And in case you have ever wondered how it must feel to have wings of your own: now you can find out by making your own set of wings with willow grown in our galaxy garden!

We will round off our afternoon programme with some fast paced outdoor group games in the gardens such as hide & spy, the hunting sparrow hawk or the alpha wolf.

ALL ACTIVITIES WILL START OR BE BASED AT THE PAGODA IN THE PLANET FIELD.
