Julie Freeman

Abandon Normal Devices (AND) has commissioned artist Julie Freeman for the third edition of COSMOS – an art-science residency exploring deep space. Culminating at bluedot, the audio-visual work can be experienced in the Mission Control exhibition tent, on a first come, first served basis.

Julie Freeman translates data from natural sources into kinetic sculptures, physical objects, images, sound compositions and animations. Her work explores the relationship between science and the living world; questioning the use of technology in how we translate and perceive the universe.

Julie’s focus is the investigation of data as an art material. A mix of artist and computer scientist she often works collaboratively and experimentally with organisations, scientists and curators to curate, develop and produce works, projects and exhibitions around the concept of data and its impact on us.

Over the past 15 years, her work has been shown at leading institutions including: the V&A, London’s Institute of Contemporary Art, Barbican Centre, and the Science Museum, as well as internationally. Julie has won awards from Wellcome Trust, Arts Council, and a fellowship from Nesta. She is a TED senior fellow, and a visiting researcher at Queen Mary University of London. She is curatorial director of Fine Acts, and co-directs Open Data Institute’s art programme ‘Data as Culture’.
