The Centre for Alternative Technology

The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) is a pioneering environmental education centre in Mid Wales. With a hands-on visitor centre, short courses and even postgraduate degrees, it offers learning for sustainability at every level.

Nestled in the foothills of the Snowdonia National Park, the CAT visitor centre offers interactive displays on renewable energy, green building, sustainable growing and much more – all set against a backdrop of lush organic gardens and thriving woodlands. In the summer months, visitors arrive in style on one of the world’s steepest cliff railways, powered entirely by water.

Visit the CAT stand to discover more about renewable energy. Build your own model solar boat and watch it go whizzing across the water using only the power of the sun (weather permitting!) or build a model wind turbine and see how much electricity you can generate.

Join wind power workshop in the pagoda on Saturday & Sunday

Get to grips with renewable energy as you design and test your own model wind turbine. Experiment with different shapes and sizes of blades and use your model to generate electricity. Test the power produced to see which designs work best. This workshop helps you understand how wind power works and gives an overview of how renewable energy can help combat climate change.
