The Moomins and the Comet (Live Rescore)
Bluedot is delighted to present a rare screening and live re-score of the 1983 version of The Moomins and the Comet, by original composer Graeme Miller. The original book Comet in Moominland (1946) by Tove Jansson, was written against the backdrop of political and socio-economic change in Finland and heavily influenced by Tove’s own personal relationships, which defined the narrative and character development. The storyline sees Moomintroll and Sniff set off to the Observartory in the Lovely Mountains, to find out whether a comet will hit this bluedot we call Earth.
Written during a time of hardship and war, the tolerant world of Moominvalley offered a refuge from the harshness of reality which remain appealing and relevant, particularly in the political backdrop of 2017.
The music for the 1983 version was written and played by two Leeds-based post punk avant-garde theatre composers, who helped exacerbate the programme’s bizarre spectral storylines and characters, earning a firm fixture of fear, intrigue and infatuation in the hearts and memories of a slightly confused electro-fed generation,
alongside reconstituted storylines and the narrations/impersonations of comedy actor Richard Murdoch.
